TTC is currently focused on, among other things, the Tongass National Forest Land Management Plan revision, near term timber supply needs, timber management strategies for the long term, forestry workforce training, implementation of Shared Stewardship and Good Neighbor Authority, support for small mills, and accelerating restoration of riparian ecosystems and degraded deer habitat.

Community Alternative Draft

Discussions held through the TCC have been instrumental in shaping this Community Alternative. The result is a practical middle-ground approach for the Tongass Forest Plan revision, one that aims to support a more reliable timber supply, protect the subsistence resources rural Alaskans depend on, and prioritize salmon habitat, recreation, and tourism as key drivers of Southeast Alaska’s economy.

The Community Alternative intends to show that these goals do not have to be treated as conflicting. It offers a clear management area framework and includes a strong watershed-based conservation strategy intended to improve subsistence opportunities and climate resilience while streamlining timber sale NEPA. It also provides measurable standards for shared stewardship, community benefits, and transparency.
